The Jeudevine Memorial Library was a founding member of Hardwick Neighbor to Neighbor. The library took a lead role in establishing a phone and e-mail Helpline to field questions and secure volunteer resources for area residents. Help with transportation has risen to the top of these requests, along with a wide variety of other means of support (e.g., yard work, shoveling, household chores). Additionally, the “100 Hats for Hardwick” 2022 initiative, on behalf of the Hardwick Food Pantry, netted nearly 300 donations in its first year and has since become an annual event.

Hardwick Neighbor to Neighbor took a lead role in both the 2023 and 2024 floods by managing the Hardwick Supply and Support Center. This partnership with the town evolved to include documenting the “lessons learned” in the first two floods, and honing the town’s Local Emergency Management Plan to increase our readiness for any subsequent disaster. We will continue to be responsible for the management of the Hardwick Supply and Support Center and assist in volunteer management in future emergency situations.

Hardwick Neighbor to Neighbor is a year-round organization committed to building on our town’s many resources and vibrant community spirit. We have sought ways to help individual neighborhoods collectively recognize their strengths and advocate for their needs. The “Meet the New Town Manager” series, five separate neighborhood potluck dinners and conversations with David Upson, set a precedent for this aspect of our mission. Three neighborhood-specific dinner gatherings were also hosted after the 2024 flood, so that residents could reflect on the impact of the floods and identify ways to be better prepared in the future. Most recently, 78 people shared a meal and learned more about our work and ways they might be involved.

The 2020 pandemic sparked the grassroots founding of Hardwick Neighbor to Neighbor. Over 3,000 masks were made and distributed by volunteers. HCTV spots, entitled “Who do you wear your mask for?” promoted the use of these masks. A Facebook Page was established to share resources and disseminate basic information. Youth organized movie nights and a virtual party were hosted to address a widespread sense of isolation.
